That was the news dropped on tactical shooter fans anxiously waiting the arrival of Hidden & Dangerous 2, the squad-based sequel from Illusion Softworks. Although multiplayer cooperative game modes had been promised literally for years, for whatever reason, the developers decided it was to best to release Hidden & Dangerous 2 without it. To say it was a significant disappointment for those hardcore fans who?d been playing the original game for years goes without being said, but for the average gamer, it wasn?t much to complain about. For most who experienced Hidden & Dangerous 2 (the publisher claims over one million did) this was a non-issue because the single-player game was so engrossing.

I fell into the category of severely pissed fans, if for no other reason than because I felt I knew how much benefit a good cooperative mode would have on the game. I expressed that disappointment in my original review of Hidden & Dangerous 2, saying, ?a great single player FPS deserves to have a great cooperative multiplayer mode.? Without it, I had to spend time exclusively with the single player mode. While this isn?t a terrible fate, it wasn?t hard to see that these complex and challenging single-player missions would make for excellent cooperative gaming. See, Hidden & Dangerous 2 isn?t just another on-the-rails FPS, but is instead a really smart, flexible game which forces players to make tactical decisions.

Fortunately, Illusion Softworks has finally come through with a cooperative multiplayer mode in the new expansion pack for Hidden & Dangerous 2 Sabre Squadron. Sabre Squadron?s main feature for hardcore players is the ability to play the game?s entire single player campaign through a multiplayer cooperative mode. Yes, the campaign is all new, piled high with nine missions, but because of technical limitations, it?s not possible to play the original Hidden & Dangerous 2 missions in the new cooperative multiplayer mode.

For fans of the game who are less hardcore, Illusion has seen fit to add the new single-player campaign along with a handful of new multiplayer maps for the deathmatch-oriented game modes, as well as an improved A.I., new weapons (Panzershreck, MAS MLE 36, and a G43 rifle), and a few more vehicles like the Willy?s Jeep and an M4 Sherman tank. That may seem a bit short in terms of content, but given the amount of game time presented by these challenging campaign missions and its rock-bottom price of $10, Sabre Squadron is very much an excellent value.

As an expansion pack (or mission pack, one might cynically say), Sabre Squadron doesn?t change much from the existing formula found in Hidden & Dangerous 2. The game is still a tactical first-person shooter set during World War II in which the player directs a small squad of four SAS members in operations behind enemy lines across Europe. The level of micromanagement is at times quite tedious, with everything from outfitting equipment to planning attack routes to directing squad members on the field of battle creating a perhaps overwhelming scenario. Players accustomed to being led by the nose in Call of Duty or Medal of Honor type shooters may find the change of pace will be quite shocking, so much so that it's important to know what to expect. Sabre Squadron is as hard as Hidden & Dangerous 2 ever was; the four-man SAS squad will still need to take on a German garrison (or thereabouts) in a game universe where a single shot can kill. To put it plainly, my emotions swung violently from frustration to euphoria.

To complicate matters, the AI still remains a disappointment despite claims of its improvement. The initial Hidden & Dangerous 2 patch did more for the game than Sabre Squadron's claimed improvements, so players can expect both enemy and friendly AI to be frustratingly stupid. There's still hope for micromanagers, but given the extreme difficulty of the games, one would hope the friendly AI would be less of a hindrance. Instead of directing troops in complex maneuvers against enemy formations, I found myself simply towing them along from critical point to critical point, using them as added firepower or for carefully controlled flanking maneuvers. I can't say that I expected the AI to be significantly improved in an expansion pack, but the AI's lackluster performance only served to remind me of my frustrations in the first game.

In order to remind myself of why I praised the original Hidden & Dangerous 2 (calling it 'challenging' rather than, say, 'poorly designed'), I had to turn to Sabre Squadron's multiplayer cooperative mode.
